Drone Services for Local Authorities and Government Bodies

Drone Services Ireland provides professional drone survey and inspection services to local authorities, county councils, government agencies and semi-state bodies across Ireland. We support public sector teams with road and infrastructure condition surveys, topographic mapping for planning compliance, building and housing stock inspections, coastal erosion monitoring and rapid storm damage assessments.

All survey data is delivered in IRENET95 (ITM) projection and formats accepted by planning authorities and the Ordnance Survey. We hold full EASA Specific Category authorisation, carry €6.5M public liability insurance and have operated commercially since 2016.

Road and Infrastructure Condition Surveys

Our drone corridor survey service captures high-resolution imagery and 3D models of road surfaces, bridges, retaining walls, footpaths and cycle lanes. This data supports pavement condition assessment, defect identification, maintenance planning and capital works prioritisation. We have direct experience with the BusConnects corridor survey programme and regularly operate in urban environments with complex traffic and airspace coordination requirements.

For bridge and culvert inspections, our drones capture structural detail from angles that are difficult or dangerous to access on foot. Combined with 3D modelling and digital twin outputs, inspection teams can review structures remotely and track condition changes over time.

Planning Compliance and Topographic Mapping

Topographic drone surveys generate the contour data, spot levels, and feature mapping that planning authorities require for condition compliance, development control and environmental assessments. Our surveys achieve an accuracy of +/-5 cm using RTK/PPK positioning, verified against ground control points.

We deliver CAD-ready outputs including DWG/DXF contour plans, digital terrain models (DTMs), digital surface models (DSMs) and georeferenced orthomosaic maps. All data is projected in IRENET95 (ITM) for direct use in local authority GIS systems and planning submissions. For sites with dense vegetation, our drone LiDAR survey service penetrates the canopy to reveal bare-earth terrain that photogrammetry cannot capture.

Public Building and Housing Stock Inspections

Local authorities managing large housing portfolios can use our drone roof and building inspection service to efficiently assess the condition across multiple properties. High-resolution imagery identifies slate and tile damage, flashing failures, chimney defects, gutter blockages and structural movement without the need for scaffolding or cherry pickers at each property.

Combined with thermal imaging surveys, we identify heat loss, moisture ingress and insulation failures across housing estates, supporting energy retrofit planning and BER improvement programmes. This data helps councils prioritise maintenance budgets and demonstrate compliance with housing quality standards.

Coastal Erosion and Environmental Monitoring

Our aerial environmental monitoring service supports local authorities tracking coastal erosion, cliff recession, beach profiling and flood risk assessment. Repeat surveys at regular intervals produce a change-over-time analysis showing exactly where and how fast erosion is progressing.

LiDAR surveys are particularly effective for coastal monitoring because they capture terrain through marram grass and scrub vegetation that obscures the true ground surface in photographic surveys. We also support habitat mapping, invasive species detection and post-storm environmental damage assessment.

Emergency and Storm Damage Response

When severe weather strikes, our drone storm damage assessment service provides rapid deployment to assess damage to public buildings, roads, bridges, coastal defences and forestry. We can be airborne within 24 hours of safe flying conditions being restored.

Drone assessment provides councils with comprehensive damage documentation faster and more safely than ground-based inspection teams. High-resolution imagery and 3D models support insurance claims, emergency funding applications and recovery planning. Our experience includes rapid response work with ESB Networks following major storm events.

Procurement and Compliance

We understand the procurement requirements of public sector clients. Drone Services Ireland is a registered Irish company (established in 2016) with full EASA Specific Category authorisation, IAA certification, €6.5M public liability insurance, and documented safety management systems, including RAMS, method statements, and flight-specific risk assessments for every project.

We provide all documentation required for public procurement processes, including tax clearance, insurance certificates, company registration details, operational authorisation documentation and project-specific method statements. For ongoing programmes of work, we offer framework agreement arrangements with agreed pricing schedules and guaranteed response times.
