Drone Survey vs Satellite Imagery

Centimetre-accurate, on-demand site data vs low-resolution, large-area coverage. How they compare on resolution, currency, cloud, vegetation, scale and cost – and which fits your project.

The short answer

Drones and satellites answer different questions. A drone survey gives you centimetre-accurate, on-demand data of a specific site – the right tool for engineering, construction and land work. Satellite imagery gives you lower-resolution coverage of huge areas and long time-series, often cheaply or free – the right tool for regional monitoring and historical change.

For anything where you need to measure the ground to survey grade, at a site or corridor scale, in Ireland, a drone wins decisively. For continent-scale or repeated-over-years context, satellite wins. Here is how they compare on the things that matter.

Resolution and accuracy

This is the widest gap. A drone survey resolves ground detail at the centimetre level and delivers survey-grade accuracy of ±5 cm as standard (±2 cm with dense ground control). The best commercial optical satellites resolve to roughly 30–50 cm per pixel, and freely available imagery (Sentinel, Landsat) to 10 m or coarser – with positional accuracy in metres, not centimetres. For setting levels, calculating volumes, or producing a topographic survey, satellite simply is not precise enough; for spotting that a field has changed use over a season, it is fine.

Currency – how fresh is the data?

A drone flies today, on your schedule, and the data reflects the site as it is now. Satellite imagery depends on the platform’s revisit cycle and archive – you take the most recent cloud-free pass, which may be days, weeks or (for high-resolution tasking) an expensive special request. For construction progress, earthworks or anything changing week to week, on-demand drone capture is the only way to get “as of this morning”.

Cloud cover

In an Irish climate this matters more than people expect. Optical satellites cannot see through cloud, so a genuinely useful cloud-free pass over a specific Irish site can be scarce. A drone flies beneath the cloud – overcast is not an obstacle – so we can capture on days a satellite would see nothing but grey.

Ground beneath vegetation

Optical satellites see the top of the canopy, full stop. They cannot deliver bare-earth ground under trees. Drone LiDAR can – its laser finds gaps in the canopy to reach the ground, producing a true bare-earth DTM. For forestry, drainage and vegetated terrain, this is a capability satellites do not have at any price.

Scale and cost

Satellites win on sheer area. Monitoring a whole county, a national land-cover map, or change across a region is a satellite job – and archive imagery is often free. Drones are a site-and-corridor tool: a single project, a development, a 15 km line. Below roughly 50 acres a drone survey’s cost is dominated by mobilisation, not area; above regional scale, satellite is far cheaper per hectare. Choose by the scale of the question, not by a blanket “which is better”.

Frequently asked questions

Is a drone survey more accurate than satellite imagery?

Far more. A drone survey delivers ±5 cm (±2 cm with dense control); commercial satellite resolves to about 30–50 cm per pixel with metre-level positioning, and free imagery is coarser still.

Can satellites replace drone surveys?

Not for engineering or land survey work – the accuracy and currency are not there, and satellites cannot see ground under vegetation. They complement drones for regional and historical context, not site-level measurement.

Why not just use free satellite imagery?

Free imagery (Sentinel, Landsat) is excellent for coarse, large-area context, but at 10 m resolution and metre-level accuracy it cannot measure a site to survey grade or produce contours you can build from.

Which is cheaper?

For a huge area, satellite – often free. For a specific site or corridor where you need accurate ground data, a drone survey is the cost-effective option, since satellite cannot deliver the required precision at any price.

Do satellites work in cloudy Irish weather?

Optical satellites can’t see through cloud, so useful cloud-free passes can be scarce here. A drone flies below the cloud, so overcast days are not a problem.
